Handmade wedding invitations promise something preprinted cards cannot: originality. While stationers and printers can create beautiful, uniform invitations for your formal or large affair, the chances are that another couple somewhere has ordered the same exact design and wording. Of course, while embellishments and personal verse can customize a card, the fact remains that you’re working within a template. To break out of that mold, and if you happen to be having a smaller affair, the way to go is handmade.
Invitations help set expectations for guests. A formal card will indicate that the wedding ceremony will be formal. A handmade invitation does the same, only it suggests something more intimate. Custom cards can still be created by an outside company, but expect the price to be higher (per card) than even preprinted ensembles. These companies take your ideas and make them happen, literally creating each invitation one by one. The labor and attention is what the price reflects. However, the advantage to such cards is that you can create something unique for each guest and set the tone for your wedding ceremony, reception, and dinner.
Of course, another alternative is to make your own cards. Handmade wedding invitations naturally have your personal touch and even if not perfect, will likely be cherished by the recipient. Most craft stores offer prepackaged invitation kits, which include the materials needed to get started on your handmade invites. Printing can be done from your own computer and any embellishments can be chosen from the hundreds that any craft store carries. From the specialized papers to ribbons and bows to charms, stickers, and stamps, personalize your invitations as you wish.
As for wording, look at wedding invitation samples for inspiration. Even if using your own wording, such as a personal quote, the presentation of the request can still follow standard wedding etiquette. And while handmade invitations invite creativity on the part of the designer, make sure to not overdo the font or design, as the main purpose of an invitation is still to request the presence of someone.
Think of your guests as you create your handmade invitations. Design around the information: the wedding announcement, date, location, and RSVP.
