The only difference in the end may be the little extras, such as bows and other embellishments that a lot of invitations and stationery feature. A classic invitation with just clean engraving can still be a winner for any wedding.

Budget-wise, invitations at their core need to convey what they are for: the wedding. That comes down to wording and specific pieces of the ensemble, such as the invitation, a reply card, and a map or direction card. Though personalizing is definitely part of the “fun” of wedding planning, a packaged deal from a stationer will save you money. And like graduation announcements, most companies offer complete packages for wedding invitations too, including save-the-date and thank-you cards.

Another way to budget is to not include a reception card, to use only one envelope vs. the traditional two, and to use a postcard RSVP vs. a self-addressed and pre-stamped reply card. Depending on the size of the wedding party, these cost-saving ideas could add up – to your advantage.

Also if cheap wedding invitations in your objective, then definitely don’t think of hiring a calligrapher. This is one embellishment that isn’t necessary to the successful presentation of an invitation. While it could finish off an invite in style, a calligrapher is simple luxury. Instead, add a personal note yourself. As for addressing invitations, this is traditionally done by the mother of the bride, and is in itself the perfect finishing touch. For smaller gatherings, a handmade card can also be winning and memorable for the recipient.

Another consideration when searching for ways to save on wedding invitations is postage. Be aware of extra charges by the post office, such as for envelope size and thickness. Perhaps only a few cents here and there, but as with the savings noted above, it can all add up. Budgeting is an overall good first step in wedding planning. Establish a budget. Then find ways to work within it.
